Title: Braille Literacy Instructor

Department: Employee &Community Services

Reports To: Training & Employee Support Director

Hours: Part Time-up to 20 hours per week

Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to develop and deliver comprehensive Braille training to referred Lighthouse employees. This contract position is part of a two-year pilot program. This part time position is funded for up to 20 hours a week, depending upon the need of the students.

Responsibilities:

a.. Schedule and conduct preliminary assessment / evaluations to determine the participant's needs and the appropriate course of training

b.. Work closely with Training and Employee Support Director to develop and establish course curricula and scheduling

c.. Teach use of Perkins and slate & stylus

d.. Teach Level 1 and Level 2 Braille to adult learners

e.. Teach computer Braille as appropriate

f.. Design an individualized syllabus based on existing curricula, and follow ECS department training approach and philosophy

g.. Follow departmental procedures for maintaining complete, accurate files and notes on all participants

h.. Provide status reports using results of quizzes, tests, assessments and surveys to Training and Employee Support Director on the status of each participant

i.. Complete statistics and outcomes reporting monthly

j.. Coordinate with TES Director to plan and deliver one Braille intensive weekend or other similar activity

Requirements:

a.. Bachelors Degree in rehabilitation teaching, education or equivalent experience and education; teaching credential preferred

b.. Minimum 3 years Braille teaching required

c.. Mature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groups

d.. Thorough knowledge and understanding of Braille code

e.. The ability to effectively teach people who are blind or low vision

f.. Knowledge of different teaching methods, approaches and activities

g.. Flexibility in teaching approach; match method with participant's need and learning style

h.. Creativity

i.. Ability to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependable

j.. Excellent written and oral communication skills

k.. Professional demeanor
