Accessible Currency

As some of you may know, in 2002 the American Council of the Blind filed suit against the Department of the Treasury (Civil Action No. 02-0864 (JR)) alleging that the Department of Treasury violates section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 29 U.S.C. § 794, by its repeated and continuing failures to design and issue paper currency that is readily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired people.

ACB has some very exciting news to report to you! Judge Robertson has ruled in our case against the United States Treasury and, his decision was very much in favor of ACB's position! For the first time, a federal judge has found the United States government to be in violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act because of its failure to provide people who are blind with the means of identifying the denomination of paper currency. We want also to publicly thank our attorney, Jeff Lovitky, for his perseverance and hard work on this case. This is a wonderful victory not just for ACB, but for all blind and visually impaired people.
