White Cane Safety Day

White Cane Safety Day
The Board of Supervisors designated Oct. 15 as White Cane Safety Day in Fairfax County. The white cane is recognized as a tool that enables blind or visually impaired individuals to participate in many facets of community life and to strive for greater independence. Observance of this day demonstrates a commitment by the sighted community to provide equal access to basic services such as employment, housing, community services and transportation for those who are blind or visually impaired. Residents are urged to support the efforts of the Northern Virginia Council of the Blind to open the doors of opportunity for all blind or visually impaired residents in the county and throughout the nation.
