[aavl] ATTENTION ALL AAVL EMAIL LISTERS

Dear Rob,
Yes, it does get lonesome up there, as you await some interactivity from the
members. But the fact is that only a few types of or ganizations have much
interactive exchanges. Maybe opening up a Twitter, Tweet, Tooter, or
Tootpick account might get something going. Meanwhile, keep some good books
on hand and work on your PhD, as you wait.

Special Interest affiliates are interesting sorts of critters. People
originally join up for one of several reasons, ask a few questions in the
beginning, get interested in the knowledge they gleen by being a member, but
after a year or two, many members decide they have learned about as much, as
they need to know, so drop out of active membership and continue learning
from home, as it were.

In addition, most people join organizations to see what they can learn but
don't feel the need that causes them to be an active voice on committees, be
an officer or board member, or take an active part in the actual operations.

Many years ago, studies showed that only about ten percent of members in any
organization are active in running the organization. I've heard more
recently that only about five percent of organization members are now
active. We can see it all around us. Church membership is down, as is
membership in fraternal and civic organizations. There just isn't the need
to gather together with others for a louder voice, for a sense of belonging,
or to feel a strength in numbers.

If only a few people participate in an information exchange list, don't take
it personally, because that is the norm, not the exception. In the years I
edited newsletters and news magazines for organizations, I seldom got
feedback from readers. I did, though, have several people get mad at me
years ago and asked me to take them off the mailing list. Their complaint
was justified, I might add. But although I almost never got direct feedback
or comments from readers, I did get direct comments from people at the
annual conventions or periodic teleconferences.

So now I will extend to you my appreciation and gratitude for your active
participation in AAVL, and my condolences for the time it takes for AAVL
eggs to hatch. Till then, consider that silence means our members are
already feeling smarter than the average bear and running ahead of the pack.
And you DO WANT to be running at the head of the pack. Otherwise, the view
never changes.

A new but loyal friend,
Bill Lewis billlewis31 at cox.net
