[aavl] I HAVE REAL PROBLEM

Dear list members:

I do want to keep this list operational because it can be a real resource to the membership of AAVL.

SOME USES FOR IT:  One way of using it is to distribute the AAVL newsletter to many -- with no cost of Brailing and printing.  There would be no cost of reproduction for circulation.  Because of some of these factors, it could even be done more often ... possibly.  It is possible to get widespread distribution of notices/bulletins almost instantaneously.  Again, I had real hopes for this list.

Here is the problem.  In its inception, it was to be for members only, nobody getting a free ride.  However, I have no handle on who is a member and who is just trying to get subscribed to distribute spam to the rest.  Such exclusion with the list master being the only one who can subscribe protects the rest from the spammers.  Every day, I am currently getting hits from potential spammers and free-loaders.  Possibly, some are legitimate  .  ... but I don't know who has paid up and who has not.  There seems to be a list of people who are life members of AAVL, too.

Also, at present, nobody seems to even use the list.  If there were occasional notices or messages, I would believe it is of value.  If the newsletter were to be distributed on it, I could see its value.  In the case of the newsletter, I do understand not everyone has computers.

I am open to questions or comments.
