Barb:
Caveat: I am no doctor or CDE.
That said, however, I doubt your dad is in much danger of suffering a
hypoglycemic episode; he probably produces enough glucagon to take care of
normal spikes in blood sugar coming from meals or stress. However, steroids
do increase insulin resistance, resulting sometimes in increased blood
glucose levels which are treated with insulin. I've known of another person
who is not diabetic but who received insulin injections in the hospital when
she was treated with corticosteroids to fight an autoimmune reaction.
Bottom line: I wouldn't worry about it overly-much. Ask his doctor,
though.
