That is true.  I had one and it was like carrying a brick around with you.
Also, every  bottle of strips  had a strip with it that you had to put into
the machine in order to confirm the bottle of strips.  It was up-to-date at
the time, but awkward to carry around and very temperature sensitive.  Also,
it took almost one minute to read the sample, which was very aggravating
when it did not have enough blood. (It did tell you that, however.) they do
not even make the strips anymore.

Hi Barb,

I had a talking AcuCheck but it was very big and akward to carry with you. 
My understanding is that they are not made at all anymore.
