[acb-diabetics] how much diabetic education have you had?

Dear Jo Anne:

I would surmise that every diabetic has his/her own favorite diabetes books.
I have found quite a number of the diabetes-related books on BARD to be
helpful. However, were I to pick one book relating to Type 2 diabetes that
was helpful and that "tells it like it is", it would be the following:

The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes; an Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed
Becker, Gretchen. Read by Kerry Dukin. Reading time 15 hours 19 minutes.
Medicine and Health
Updated edition of Type 2 Diabetes (RC 54748), a guide to managing blood
sugar levels in type 2 Diabetes, includes treatment options and medications
available since publication of the 2001 edition. Discusses interpreting lab
results, preventing complications, dealing with stress, and making lifestyle
changes to cope with the disease. 2007.
Download The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes; an Essential Guide for the Newly
Diagnosed, DB64186

Ms. Becker gives lots of practical advice for living well with Type 2
diabetes in terms any lay person can understand. Yet she also explains a lot
of rather technical material you won't see in any other "beginner" diabetes
book.

Moreover, she is not in thrall to what I will call the American Diabetes
Association diet and treatment orthodoxy while at the same time is not in
thrall to other extreme diet fads although she tends toward low-carb. She
also explains many of the current diets one hears about in terms of their
suitability for diabetics.

The first edition of the book (mentioned in the blurb) is also available
from the BARD site.

You also can't go too far wrong by reading both the ameircan Diabetes
Association and Joslin guides to living with diabetes, both of which are on
the BARD site but which, of course, reflect the treatment philosophies of
those organizations.

If you're a Learning Ally member, check out Bill Palonsky's "Diabetes
Burnout: what To Do When You Can't Take It Anymore". If memory serves me,
it's shelf number is GJ340 but don't quote me on that.

Speaking of the BARD site, do you all have any books from there to recommend

particularly related to Type II diabetes, diet, etc. that you would consider

helpful? I never got any education either, except for one session with a
dietician which was helpful but have done a lot of reading on my own with
Diabetes Forecast and Diabetes Self-management. I also get the Diabetic
Living newsletter online but was just wondering if there are any really
helpful books on Bard or Bookshare. Thanks.

Jo Anne.

no, the educator doesn't serve my area so it's not an issue of wanting
business.
