[acb-diabetics] talking sugar tester not requiring finger stick

I have heard advertisements for a "talking" blood glucose meter. It claims
that you don't have to stick your fingers anymore. I have no idea what
features it has or whether it would be usable by a blind person. Of course
what they are talking about is alternate sight testing. I talked with my
endocrinologist about this. He said if he had the money to do it he would
charge them with false advertising. He said that alternate sight testing is
not as accurate as finger sticks. Apparently he has had to explain this to
other patients were sometimes reluctant to accept what he said. I happen to
know that I was his only blind patient and we did not talk about whether
this meter is really accessible to a blind person.

Don't rush out and get this product.

Those ads are extremely misleading. What they are talking about without
saying so is alternate site testing. It's less accurate than finger-stick
testing and generally is difficult for the blind to do because it's tough to
locate the drop of blood.
