[acb-hsp] MSW?

Hi Donna Rose,

Yes, I generally take para-transit, the meeting was a last minute thing and
I did not feel up to taking the bus. My sister just dropped me off, she did
not come to the meeting with me. Looks like I am going to withdraw and then
will finish my degree at a later date. Disappointing, but, sometimes you
just have to do what you have to do. I do have a lead on a job, so hopefully
that will work out. If not I will continue to recover and see what happens.

Thanks,

Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,

Where do you live ? Don't you have paratransit? You might want to think
about moving to a place where you can get around by yourself. By all means
don't have your sister accompany you to your meeting. Just let her drop you
off. Are you in a master's program? If so, you need to be doing more than
cutting and pasting into computer documents. Even a bachelor's degree
student needs hands on experience with real people. The thing is, if you
have been ill you still have to get the number of intern hours to qualify
for your degree. I had to have surgery during a semester of my master's
degree in social work and had to take an incomplete and finish my work the
next semester. This would be an option for you. The thing is in order to
graduate with or without a disability you have to be qualified to be there
and put in the same amount of work as other students. I had a friend who
had ovarian cancer who was in my bachelor's degree program in social work.
I could see she was likely not going to live so I applied for her to get an
honorary degree so she could walk with us at graduation, but she was turned
down. And these were nuns who turned her down at a private Catholic
college. Exceptions are hard to come by no matter what the excuse. You
still have to be able to do all of the work.

Peace to you,
Donna Rose, LMSW

Donna Rose,

Yes, Millersville is accredited. I think part of the problem is the program
has been growing and there placements are not. The filed coordinator has
only been in this position for 2 years, I just think there is some miss
communication happening. Yes, I do most of my hours at the office, but all I
have been doing is updating a database which is basically copy and paste so
it can be done from home. I am only asking for 2 weeks while I recover. I
actually have a meeting with the head of the department, the field
supervisor and my field liaison, the only person that will not be at the
meeting is my work supervisor (which is fine with me). Now I just have to
find a way to get there. I know what I have asked on here is unorthodox,
but, just trying to find some options. The place I want to do an internship
at does drug and alcohol counseling and they have many master level
clinicians, just no MSW's, so I would be receiving supervision there, just
not from a MSW. So that is my dilemma. Okay, my sister just called so I will
be able to make my meeting. Please say a prayer and keep your fingers
crossed that something positive happens.

Yvonne,

You need to get a case for your computer that is on wheels. That is what I
have. Also, I think you need to go and talk with the director of your
social work program about these problems. If your school is accredited you
must attend so many hours of field placement experience in order to get your
degree and that is why it can't be done from home. It is the school's
responsibility to help you find a placement where you will get supervision.
Otherwise it is likely you will have to pay for this help. I have
supervised students before, and it was helpful they were doing their
placements at my agency so I really knew how they were doing. One did very
poorly and I didn't really think she should be allowed to graduate, but she
did. I have to ask myself, what kind of school are you attending? They
sound as though they aren't very supportive. Is the school accredited by
the Council on Social work Education? In order to get your license and work
in most states you need to be attending a program which is accreditted. I
hope this is the case.

Peace to you,

Yes, this semester is almost over and I am not sure if I will even get my
hours in. I have had some attendance issues in the past, but have addressed
the problem. But, I just had emergency surgery to take out my appendix and
have asked to work from home for 2 weeks since I am not able to carry my
laptop bag around since it is to heavy. I called and emailed my supervisor
and she has not even bothered to return either message. I found out that I
cannot work from home from the field coordinator. I was also questioned why
I can attend class and not work, well class is 2 hours per day for 3 days a
week and I can get around not taking my laptop. So at this point I am very
stressed and upset, not to mention in pain.

Hi Donna,

I am one of those unassertive ones who suffered through a terrible field
placement and failed, and thus had to repeat a year of grad school. By all
means, I would urge Yvonne to request an alternate placement. It is early
enough in the school year that this should be possible.

Hi Yvonne,

I think this person has to live in your state. Didn't your school make this
placement? They usually do this for you which means they are responsible
for changing it when yours doesn't work out. I would suggest you go and
talk to your field placement office. I have seen a lot of students who
aren't comfortable with their current placements who suffer in silence when
changing might be possible and necessary. Good luck.

I am having allot of problems with my current internship and would like to
change, but I need to be supervised by someone with a MSW or a higher degree
in social work. So I am wondering if anyone on the list has a MSW, and if I
am allowed would have 1 hour per week to help me with supervision? Not sure
yet if this is even allowed, but am checking out my options.

Thanks,

Yvonne
