[acb-hsp] Characteristics of An Ideal Supervisor

I can identify with that. I am a firm believer in good clinical and administrative supervision. A few years agoe, our agency decided to discontinue it. New employees must get it from somewhere else. As a result, I believe the quality of both paperwork and services have diminished. I am supervising a limited licensed social worker who is paying me to do it.

  Deanna,

I am glad that you are having a positive experience. The problem for voc rehab counselors at the VA is that the VA, at least the healthcare side, does not recognize voc rehab as a true profession, so we are usually placed under another professional discipline, such as social work or psychology, and they look at us simply as workers who carry out a specific task, kind of like nursing assistants. In all of my time at the VA, I only had one supervisor who came out of voc rehab, and he was a drunk, with a lot of personal issues that he brought to the job. Otherwise, my supervisors have been psychologists, social workers, and even an OT. The problem with many of them has been that they knew little about the capabilities of those that they were supervising, and were too full of themselves to admit it. It is particularly hard on new staff because they desperately need good supervision, and they don’t get it. It’s kind of like being thrown into the ocean and being expected to just start swimming.

  Andy
