You know, I've heard that those who have earned a JD degree are entitled to
put the Dr. in front of their name, but I've never known of a single
instance where anyone has done it. Maurer got an honorary doctorate from,as
I recall, the University of Louisville. He didn't tack the Dr. on until
after he got that. On the other hand, PHD's using Dr. has been
well-established. I'm not sure I'd use it if I ever earned a PHD, but the
fact is it's completely acceptable to do so. You can call it pretentious,
and in many cases you may very well be right, but that doesn't change the
fact that it's accepted in society. It seems to me you're walking a bit of a
fine line. It's one thing to talk about pretention in general terms. It's
quite another to make it personal.
