[acb-hsp] ACB-HSP Conference Call Reminder for February 13th, 2011Hi. Well, I"m not in Boston, but I am indeed in private practice. I love it and would not trade it for any agency. It takes a lot of creativity and willingness to stick your neck out there.
What I did was set aside some money for six months of start up. I found a low-cost place that I could rent. I have another person who wanted to go in with me. And we just decided we were going to do it!
So we made up our own fliers advertising what we do, who we are and what we had to offer. We started getting ourselves on every insurance panel we could possibly get on. That process takes awhile; some longer than others. Then, little by little, EAP panels started contacting us and I didn't turn down one of them.
We also started contacting with anyone and everyone we could--like Division of Corrections, colleges, etc. We just simply went there, told them who we were, what we could offer them and why they needed us. Some bought it, some told us where to go straight out, some said they would think about it. Some did, many didn't. Some still are, some took awhile.
Six years later? I now pay someone to do my billing. My business shows a proffit. I'm happier, and busier, than I've ever been. I call my hours, my time, what I want to do and who I do it for and with.

It is harder in some locations than others depending on how much competition is in your area, the prevalence of managed care, and how many panels you are able to join. I've not found it a good way to make a living. But it does help to pay some expenses. Sharon

My name is Jennifer Harnish and I am a clinical psychologist in the Boston area. I am newly licensed although did my training a dozen years ago before my kids were born and before doing my own vision rehab. I am first hoping to connect with any Boston area therapists who are visually impaired. Also I am open to hearing any tips for starting a private practice.

Also, have you found that the professional journals and texts are available in electronic formats? I have found some books on Bookshare but am just beginning to renew memberships with APA and will be asking for their journals in electronic format.

Thank you for any ideas you have to share and I am hoping to attend the conference in July to meet many of you in person.
  Jennifer Harnish
