Jessie: I agree re. offenders. Sounds exactly like what I remember saying
as a blind person with a masters degree: would someone just give me a
chance to prove myself. Would someone just believe that a blind person can
do this job and give me a shot. Sounds like most of us here on the list.

Andy, Thank you for sending this. This is certainly a difficult one for
offenders. They are released, either to Day Report Centers, out on
probation or parole, and the first requirement is "get a job, pay your fines
and restitution and child support". Often times, these fees, in addition
to what people generally have for living, are extremely high. Now, I ask:
how is anyone to pay their bills without a job?
So they go job-seeking. They utilize all of whatever skills they have
...and some have little skills, some have some. And, wham! over and over,
the Felony or misdemeanor (or several) keeps lurking its ugly head.
Is it any wonder many of them reoffend; just to get out of the ratrace where
there really is no win?
And we wonder why?
This is especially true for the hardcore offenders or the multiple
offenders. And many of them truly, truly want to make their lives better,
to do something outside to help others. They don't want to be
criminals--they just want someone to believe in them and to be given a
chance. All they want, all they ever wanted, was someone to believe in
them.
That's really not so different than what we all want; but for many, soooo
hard to get, it seems.
And it can be just heart-breaking.

Helpful info for those of us who work with offenders.
