The call began at 8:30 pm. EST., 5:30 pm. PST. on Sunday, February 12, 2012.
The topic for discussion was the process of obtaining a doctorate degree in
the Human Services professions, and our guest speaker was Jessie Rayl, who
is currently pursuing a doctorate degree at Argosy University. Prior to
Jessie's arrival on the call, it was decided that there would be an ACB-HSP
Officers' call on March 4, 2012 at 6:30 pm. EST, 3:30 pm. PSt. Jessie first
detailed the types of doctorate degrees that are available, and what each
entails. She is pursuing an E.D.D., which is an educational doctorate.
This type of degree enables one to teach at the college or university level.
The other 2 types of degrees are the P.H.D., and the PSY-D degree. The
P.H.D. is a research-oriented degree, which involves extensive use of tests,
measurements, and statistics. The PSY-D degree is a psychology degree that
is geared toward those interested in clinical psychology. All of these
degrees require a substantial amount of research, and the writing of a
doctoral dissertation. Jessie said that the university wanted her to write
a blindness-related dissertation, but her heart is in criminology.
Therefore, she intends to write a dissertation focused on the treatment of
criminals, and the success rate for treating criminals as opposed to
punishing them. She further stated that, upon graduation, she intends to
seek employment at a college or university as an online instructor, teaching
one or two classes a semester. She also spoke about the obstacles she faced
regarding the accessibility of some online learning tools, such as
Blackboard, and the inaccessibility of the statistics package she needed
when taking that course. Finally, she said that she was applying for a loan
forgiveness program, which would help pay her tuition. This program might
require her to relocate so she could work for a college, university, or
government agency, and have a portion of her salary go toward repaying her
tuition expenses. Everyone found her presentation to be very informative
and exciting. The call was adjourned at 9:15 pm. EST., 6:15 pm PST.
Respectfully Submitted,
Marleen O'Neill
Secretary
