[acb-hsp] Diversity training session at ACB convention

Hi. Well, I agree that there are just too many things going on, all at once
and many of the sessions are not well attended because people cannot be two
or three places at once. Then, some people (like me) just do not want to
fill our entire time up attending meeting after meeting after meeting. We
want to go on tours, socialize, do other much more interesting things.
I think several things could help, actually; however, it may well not be
things some want to hear or even try to do.
Some affiliates really monopolize the convention with something every day,
all the time. This could be cut back and better managed. They could go in
jointly with other affiliates on some of it, combine some of their stuff on
some, and simply be required to limit other things.
The combining with larger affiliates and small affiliates would, then, give
the smaller affiliates much broader support, exposure and representation
while giving the larger affiliate their "thing".
For example, ACB-HSP could combine with PRYDE, then GDUI, and then FIA and
NABS and the lawyers and low vision. Now, we've done six things, and then
one of our own. Now, we could do something with BITS and whomever else.
That's seven, and one of our own.
Think of all the exposure, potential members we get now, and people could be
two places essentially at once--holding loyalty to their affiliates. Or,
those who pay the package deals--like PRYDE and BITS and vendors have don't
lose their money just because they did not attend PRYDE's presentation on
relationships all because ACB-HSP had something on same-sex marriage, pros
and cons.
We combine the two, somehow.
See how it works?
I don't think it is an issue of refusing admission of an special interest
affiliate. I think it is an issue of how the heck can people figure out
what to attend when there is simply too much going on, affiliates refuse to
work together, each affiliate wants their own show on the stage and to have
and be the best show and by gosh, no one better take it from them, and it
really then becomes a crazy competition for who has and does most.
And, people are either at the exhibit hall, on tours or simply elsewhere.
Meanwhile, affiliates are spending a lot of hardearned dollars trying to put
on good presentations that few attend.

Hi All,

when I got back from convention I had hundreds of email messages so I am
just getting to respond. I am a human service provider or I should say was.
I am now retired.

I share your concern about why we haven't been able to grow this affiliate.
I was at the convention and had so many conflicts that I couldn't go to many
of the sessions I would like to have attended.

My opinion about the poor attendance at affiliate programs is that there are
too many things going on at convention. Most of the sessions and meetings I
was able to attend were poorly attended. I know of one affiliate who didn't
have a quorum for their business meeting.

I happened to sit next to Melanie Brunson on my flight home. I mentions my
concern about this to her. She said this was not the first time anyone had
mentioned the problem to her. Basically she said no one wants to say no to
anyone who wants to be on the program.

I know other people who think the schedule is too full. In the last few
years, it seems every ACB committee a program at the convention. I believe
this is a partial reason why so many affiliate programs are so poorly
attended. I am not sure what the answer is, but maybe some of the rest of
you will have some ideas.

Again, I agree with all points, Andy.
For the life of me, I cannot fathom why ACBHSP continues to be so small.
And I don't have any real suggestions, other than what I've suggested time
and time again, as to how to grow the affiliate. However, it just astounds
me that with all the human service people out there, and human services is
so very broad, the affiliate continues to be so small.
