Keep in mind that HIPAA only applies to health related information and to healthcare facilities.  It does not apply to settings like the welfare or Social Security office, but there is other privacy legislation that may apply in those situations.

Darla, I suspect it didn’t happen before a client brought it up was for the simple reason that it never occurred to the powers that be that this would be an issue. We’re probably going to see a lot of these issues coming up as time goes in in this Dilbert-driven cubicle society. I had occasion to visit the Social Security office not too long ago, and while my business was being dealt with I could hear, plain as day, what was happening in cubicles nearby. To me, this was more than a little unsettling. At some point these issues are going to have to be dealt with on a large scale.
