[acb-hsp] If you work at an Independent Living Center

Hi Karen,
At my job they are going to completely electronic charting, but the software
they use, and there is a bunch of it, is not accessible. Of course I am
constantly advocating for myself and asking them to consider accessible
means whenever possible. Another thing they are doing is scanning all of
the old docs from the charts into the electronic system. Since there is
mostly handwriting on these I cannot read them independently. In my job
this isn't that important, but in order to get a better job there these
problems would have to be solved. I call our Commission for the Blind to
help write some scripts, but we only have one tech guy and he isn't not the
easiest person. He started getting militant and I was afraid he might talk
to my colleagues at work in an inappropriate manner regarding legal
accommodations and lose my job for me. I reported this to the appropriate
person at our Commission and she said she was going to talk to him. I also
told him that the legal aspects of my accommodations were my responsibility
and I would be responsible for them, and I just needed his help working on
the software so I could use it with JAWS. This employer is the best one for
which I have ever worked, and they want things to be comfortable for me, so
I don't want him coming in and ruining it. I think our State's need more
tech people available to help with these type of things, and not just one
person for the whole state. I have even thought about going down to FS and
getting training in script writing, but I am not certain my brain is capable
of that much technical type stuff since I am mainly a musician and artist.
I suppose if I apply myself maybe it could be done. I think it would be
easier to be self employed and I am working toward that. Once I get a
kidney transplant I will likely have the energy to do that while still
working with my employer until my self employment becomes more lucrative.
Go Bravely,
Donna Rose, LMSW
