Jobs: Work Is Recovery

For many, the road to recovery begins with part-time or full-time employment. Having a job is truly transformative. It supports and promotes independence and pride. Supported Employment/ Individual Placement & Support (SE/IPS) is an evidence-based practice that helps people with serious mental illness identify, acquire, and maintain competitive employment ("real jobs") of their choice. These jobs are found in the community and are not provided or owned by human service organizations. The SE/IPS model endorses competitive employment for several reasons: many consumers like these jobs more than they like sheltered work; these jobs reduce stigma by enabling consumers to work side-by-side with people in their communities who do not have mental illness; these jobs promote self-determination and self-sufficiency. Many workshops at Conference 2012 teach introductory to advanced skills for SE/IPS services. Sign up today:

Benefits Planning & Recovery

Case managers, employment specialists, and other service providers do not need to be full-time benefits counselors or experts in benefits planning to help people with mental illness make more informed decisions about their financial futures. Benefits planning begins with knowing some basic information about benefits programs and understanding how earned income from a paycheck and work incentives may complement benefits over time to promote long-term financial stability and consumer choice, including part-time or full-time employment. Attend these workshops and learn about some common programs, such as cash benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSI, SSDI), work incentives, Medicaid, Medicare, and housing subsidies.
