Job Type: Temporary Position (25-40 hours per week) from
February 4, 2013
to May 31st, 2013
*There is a possibility that the ADA intern will be able to
continue the
internship as a temporary employee of the Iowa Department of
Human Rights
for four months (6/1/13 to 9/30/13) after the completion of the
4-month
internship at Disability Rights Iowa (2/4/13 to 5/31/13)
Pay Range: $19.53 per hour depending on experience
Benefits: No benefits, except employee may contribute to a
403(b)
retirement plan.
Agency Description: Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) is a
well-established
innovative, non-profit, legally-based organization dedicated to
advancing
the rights of Iowans with disabilities, including individuals
with mental
illness. DRI is the federally-mandated protection and advocacy
agency for
individuals with disabilities in Iowa. Disability Rights Iowa
works to
achieve fairness and justice for people with disabilities through
quality
legal representation, advocacy, investigations of abuse and
neglect,
peer/self-advocacy services, community partnerships, legislative
and
regulatory advocacy work, education and outreach. DRI"s legal
work includes

ADA Intern Job Description: The focus of the internship is on
Title II
(public services) and III of the ADA (public accommodations).
The intern
will be responsible for a) providing technical assistance,
information, and
training on the Americans with Disabilities Act and related
disability laws,
b) evaluating the accessibility of state facilities and services,

attending meetings about the ADA, and drafting ADA-related
public reports,
as assigned. The intern will be supervised by one of DRI's
staff
attorneys.
Training. The intern will be required to attend the 2013
National ADA
Symposium, May 12-15, 2013 in San Antonio. www.adasymposium.org.
The Great
Plains ADA Center will fund the intern's tuition, transportation
and
expenses.
Minimum Qualifications: (Applicants must meet each of the
qualifications to
be considered for an interview)
1. An associate's or bachelor's degree, preferably in Social
Work,
Education, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability
Studies or
another related field of study, or current enrollment in such a
program;
2. A minimum of one year experience working with people with
disabilities;
3. Strong and effective writing, verbal and negotiating
communication
skills;
4. Strong organizational skills;
5. Excellent interpersonal , relationship-building and
collaboration
skills to be able to work with others inside and outside of the
organization;
6. Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative
solutions;
7. Ability to maintain thorough and complete records;
8. Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision;
and
9. Ability to use Microsoft Office
