While visiting in Detroit I watched some Canadian television and was
delighted to read that most of the children's programming was audio
described. Hooray!

Happy New Year, subscribers to the Audio Description Project Discussion
List!
Our preliminary count of described DVDs for 2010 is a whopping 48, far
outpacing the entire history of described first-run movie DVDs from 2000
to 2009. The increase is primarily due to the commitment of Sony,
Universal Pictures, and Disney during the year to transfer description
from movies they choose to describe to their DVD releases. Universal,
however, has not committed to making the description available on all
RENTAL versions, so you might have to purchase the DVD for a Universal
release to get description. Amazon is still not listing information
confirming description.
Also, we found in a few cases that rentals of DVDs were delayed by up to
a month or more after the DVD was released for sale. We try to include
as much information about availability of description when we post a new
release on our DVDs page on the website. You can help complete our
information by confirming description on any DVD purchased via Amazon.
(We try to confirm that a DVD cover mentions description at our local
Blockbuster.)
So the first described DVD of 2011 has come out already: Dinner With
Schmucks, starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. New releases come out on
Tuesdays, and we try to post the information by Wednesday. Remember: we
announce first on Facebook, immediately after posting to the website.
To those of you who made purchases of DVDs and anything else on Amazon by
clicking through one of our links on the website, we thank you. The
referral income we get helps support this website! The fourth quarter of
2010 was our best referral income to date, so keep up the good work
(i.e., click-throughs)!
On a different note, someone commented they were getting a lot of
garbage information (how to subscribe and post, for example) at the top
of postings they received from this list. The problem was traced to
subscribing in DIGEST MODE, rather than receiving individual posts one by
one. The list is generally low volume enough that digest subscriptions
are probably not necessary, thus eliminating the problem. We have no
control over how digest mode works.
