YouTube recreation gets round Prop 8 trial TV ban

Two film producers have used YouTube to get round a TV camera ban at a high-profile trial centered on California's ban on same-sex marriage. They say it

has not only allowed viewers to watch video, but to take advantage of other technological benefits.

The case, Perry v Schwarzenegger, had its closing arguments this week. It challenges the constitutional validity of the controversial Proposition 8 ban.

Although the court where it is being held has an experimental televising scheme, the case was exempted from coverage when it began in January, with a second

ruling upholding the camera ban for this week's final addresses.

At the time of the initial TV ban, the judge had planned to allow filming for YouTube streaming; that idea was blocked by the Supreme Court.

However, filmmakers John Ireland and John Ainsworth found a way round that: each day they have taken transcripts of the trial (which are public record)

and used actors to recreate the scenes in the courtroom. That means that a portrayal of the entire trial is available online through their

video channel.

Because they had the transcripts, it was easy to use YouTube's automatic tools for adding captions in the correct places and provide instant translations

into other languages.

They've also been able to

link up the video and the text transcripts

so that somebody reading the transcripts can instantly jump to the appropriate section of video. That's done via the YouTube facility for producing a link

which not only points to a video, but starts playing at a specific time.
