What if a car slides off the road and hits you? Well, then you're in trouble. So I counter with "What if a piano falls on your head?" Then you're in trouble, too. Yes, people have been hit by cars veering off the road and hitting them while they stood on the sidewalk minding their own beeswax, but these incidents have actually not been caused by slick roads, but rather, in both instances that I can think of off the top of my head, due to the drivers being drunk. So once again, it comes down to the personal irresponsibility of individuals, not large-scale overblown attempts to prevent all eventualities.
And nowhere did I say that anyone should stay home from work in bad weather, unless of course, the governor tells you to, which happens sometimes. Whoopee, snow day!
I still say that poisoning the environment with tons of these toxic, caustic chemicals is not the best answer.
