Carol Ewing, Chair of the Dujrward K. McDaniel Fund Committee, has asked that I send this message out to the ACB Leadership List so that you can get this information out to anyone you may think would be a good candidate for this great experience.
The deadline for submission of application letters has been extended to May 1st this year. I am also including the text of the two documents regarding the committee guidelines and the expectations for this program recipients.
The following guidelines were approved by the ACB Board of Directors February 21, 2009, Washington D.C.
DURWARD K. McDANIEL MEMORIAL FUND FIRST TIMER PROGRAM
1. There should be two recipients, one each from opposite sides of the Mississippi River.
2. The announcements should be advertised in all the appropriate places.
3. Letters must be received by April 1 into the national office.
4. Each applicant must have a letter of sponsorship from his/her state or special interest affiliate president.
5. Each applicant must submit a personal narrative stating how this scholarship will be of benefit to him or her, as well as their affiliate and the community at-large.
6. An applicant must be an active member in good standing of ACB or one of its affiliates.
7. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be blind or visually impaired.
8. Applicants must not have attended a previous ACB national convention, whether or not a member at that time.

EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF DURWARD K. McDANIEL FIRST TIMER WINNERS
1. Your mentor will answer questions and assist logistics.
2. Determine your travel desires & lodging, study ACB registration packet.
3. Pre-register in a timely manner, use your Mentor's assistance.
4. Upon arrival, check in with ACB Registration Desk to review stipend and tickets.
5. Contact Durward K. McDaniel committee chair and your affiliate president.
6. If possible, attend pre or post convention ACB Board Meeting.
7. Attend opening session on Sunday night for presentation to the convention. (Business casual dress recommended).
8. Attend plenary sessions each morning of the convention. Please sit with your affiliate.
9. Attend Legislative and/or Membership Seminar.
10. Attend McDaniel Fund event usually Thursday evening. Complimentary ticket.
11. Attend ACB Banquet, Friday evening. Complimentary ticket.
12. Feel free to confer with any member of the committee in selecting other activities you may be interested in.
13. Learn and Enjoy yourself.
14. If possible, submit an article to the Braille Forum sharing your First Timer's experience.
