Dear David,

Can you explain why there needs to be another FCB chapter in the Miami area? Will you draw members who are not already affiliated with one of the established chapters?

Pleaseunderstand: I'm not trying to downplay your efforts or those of the people with whom you meet every month, but it is necessary and beneficial to speak with one strong voice when advocating for things like audible pedestrian signals.

  Subject: [fcb-l] Introduction

  Dear FCB members,

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is David New and I live in Miami Beach.

I am proposing to start a new chapter of the FCB here in Miami Beach and I am looking forward to meeting you in person this December in St. Petersburg Florida.

Just so you know a little bit about me, I am the Chairman of the Miami Beach Disability Access Committee, a committee of the Mayor.

I have been on this committee for several years now and have been instrumental in the implementation of the Audible Pedestrian Signal program among other accessible features in our city.

I have started a non-profit organization called Power Access in order to create a city wide event called Ability Explosion. The purpose of this event is to create awareness and education in the community as well as create opportunities for people with Disabilities while promoting accessibility for everyone who lives and visits Miami Beach.

The greater goal is to make Miami Beach the most accessible destination in the world.

With partners like the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, the Center for Independent Living and dozens of organizations in the South Florida region we have been able to create resources and a greater awareness of people living with disabilities in our community.

It is my intention to further this goal through a mutually beneficial relationship with the Florida Council of the Blind.

Thus far, we have been congregating each month to share our experiences, to listen to speakers providing services in our area and to maintain a strong position in the community.

We have advocated for change and introduced new technology for people who are blind in our city.

We have discussed books, fundraising efforts and what are role should be for the future.

It is my hope that the FCB will recognize that we are a viable and fertile group dedicated to furthering the directives of the FCB by creating educational, social, and economic opportunities specific to the needs of blind individuals.

  Thank you for your consideration.

  Sincerely,

   R. David New
