Thanks go out to the dozens and dozens of people, from several organizations and area agencies, who participated in the two White Cane & Pedestrian Safety events that were held in the Daytona Beach area on October 8 and 9. Participants crossed and recrossed at two fairly busy intersections and distributed information, while police officers did their part by stopping any driver who failed to abide by the law. Between the two events, more than a dozen citations and many warnings were given out to drivers. Local businesses helped out by donating space and offering services to those who took part in the activities. Daytona's annual White Cane observance is coordinated and sponsored by the Halifax Council of the Blind, the Daytona chapter of the NFB, Daytona Beach's Mayor's Alliance for Persons with Disabilities and Dseveral other consumer organizations and agencies. Its aim is to educate drivers, the public, officials and law enforcement about the White Cane laws and other pedestrian safety requirements. Publicity and coverage by the media is important to the success of these annual events. Radio, Newspaper and television all helped to spread the word.
