William, When I originally started talking to the Orlando Police Chief about
this topic he told me that for his entire years of 29 years, of which 24 of
them in a patrol car, he had never even heard of this law. That is when he
told me by the time he talks to our meeting I had asked him to come to with
our community blind leaders and members that he would make sure that not
only would he know about this law but that all of his Police department
would as well, especially, his patrolmen! I was made aware then that it is
so seldom used (enforced) that very few Policemen even know about it and we
really don't have any chance at this time to expect any assistance from
them unless it is most likely too late! I think that we are focusing on the
drivers, but actually William we should be spending just as much time
talking to our local police and Sherrifs as well! This is truly the only way
were goingto successfully tackle this issue. Your friend in the cause, Kirk

  Kirk,

It may go much deeper then that. Sally approached the Tallahassee police
a few years ago talking about this very thing. She was told kindly by the
chief, he had not heard of it before, but he would pass it on. That is
when we had a blind person hit in the cross walk and the person was never
ticketed.

  William

Robert, in a since, but I would rather like to see it as making the
drivers aware that there is even a law to begin with in a friendly way,
without turning them angry at us first. When I first talked with the Police
chief about the White cane law, He himself, wasn't even aware of it. After
he learned of it he had made a notice for his patrolmen about it and to be
aware of it as well. It is all about educating the public more than
punishing them, at least at first. Your friend, Kirk----- Original

Yes John, I agree! NOt only that but it would start to get people to
learn that there is in fact a LAW about drivers that pay no attention to the
blind pedestrians! In Orlando on white cane day we would cross the streets
downtown and the Police would give awhite candy canes with the White cane
law tagged on it to the drivers that would not abide by the wite cane law.
It was only for one day however, so not too afffective.

Kirk, On a lighter note, with the budget crisis in the state we
should send this video to each local government and suggest that the driver
behavior in the video is ongoing everywhere. At $179 per ticket, might be
a good revenue source for government.
          John

Mike, I had suggested something like this when I was on the white
cane committee in Orlando. I had talked withthe the Orlando Police Chief
and he had offered to work with us at random times for his patrolmen to
observe us walk across certain intersections to see how many people didn't
pay attention to the white cane law. they were willing to stop cars that
were not abiding by the law and give them a warning. It lossed any momentum
however, as our Blind community couldn't get it together to set any times or
to even show up for that matter. KH

            David,
Kudos to you and you're new chapter!

This piece was done very well. I'm going to pass it on to all my
members.

I'm going to see if my local news stations will consider doing
something like this.

Everyday I am out in the community. I am totally amazed how many
close calls I have when crossing streets.

I believe, that Besides White Cane Day, we should all, every
chapter of the FCB, do coordinated White cane walks, on the same day, same
hour, ETC.
            Several times a year.
I think this would be a great way to bring media attention to
this very dangerous concern of all of us.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

            Thanks,... Mike
