I was equally shocked when I was told by a friend this week, that a local
(very large) retirement community, which offers care from independent living
through assisted living and into intensive care unit, would not accept
anyone who "could not take care of themselves" upon entry to the facility,
and that they would consider a blind person as "not being able to take care
of themselves."!!!

Subject: [fcb-l] Drug rehab centers for the blind?
Hi everyone.
Yesterday, while I was in front of a Circle K selling the FCB raffle
tickets.
A gentleman told me that he knew of a friend in New Jersey who needed to
check into some kind of drug rehab center after deciding that after years of
drug abuse, he was finally ready to get the help to quit.
His friend was visually impaired. Believe it or not, he said that there was
not a facility in the whole state of New Jersey that would take a blind
individual for drug rehab treatment. They wound up taking him to a place in
Vermont!
So my question to this group is, does this sound true?
And most importantly, can this actually happen in the state of Florida?
If a person finally decides to get the help to save their life and then they
get denied treatment, because they are blind?
This really shocked me. But perhaps the man telling me all this left
something out. I don't know.
So, has anyone heard anything like this?
I truly hope this kind of thing, is NOT happening anywhere!
Thanks,... Mike
