Support Job Opportunity for People with Disabilities!
The Department of Labor is considering a regulation that would require companies
with government contracts to increase their efforts to hire people with disabilities.
This rule is 39 years in the making and could be the biggest advancement for equal
opportunity since the ADA.
Some are already objecting to these rules, so we need to show our support and ensure
that it is adopted and enforced.
We can make a difference! The Department is accepting comments about the rules until
February 21.
You don't have to be a lawyer, lobbyist, or policy expert to do this. A personal
statement from a community member is just as powerful-if not more so.
Here are some ideas that you might include:
* I am writing in support of the regulations to enforce section 503 of the Rehabilitation
Act.
* It's important to me that people with disabilities have more employment opportunities.
* This rule will make a level playing field for millions of people with disabilities
who are searching for jobs.
* I've faced challenges while looking for a job and this will help people like
me have more opportunities to work.
* People with disabilities are ready to work and are as qualified as anyone else.
This rule will help us get into the work force and contribute our talents.
* This rule will make affirmative action programs for people with disabilities
much more effective.
* Anything else you think is important in this conversation.
It's easy to submit your comments. Just click

Problem, Panelists Tell EEOC

HHS Takes Action to Ensure Equal Access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
via HHS (2.17.12):
HHS' Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has entered into a settlement agreement
with Advanced Dialysis Centers in Randallstown Maryland ("ADC"), to ensure individuals
who are deaf and hard of hearing have equal access to programs and activities as
required under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA)...
Our Interfaith Work: An Amazing Gift
Today the AAPD family celebrates the release of Amazing Gifts: Stories of Faith,
Disability, and Inclusion. This release was a moment four years in the making.
Ginny Thornburgh, director of AAPD's Interfaith Initiative, envisioned, promoted,
and nurtured this project from start to finish, and wrote the book's foreword. The
book, a collection of 64 stories of real individuals, is a moving, beautiful example
of how we can change the world by changing perceptions. Noted religion writer Mark
Pinsky wrote Amazing Gifts, interviewing people of all faiths from around the country
about their experiences with faith and disability...
