Mike,
below is the local Fighting Blindness president for southwest Florida. But
be aware that there are chapters all around the state and possibly this
contact can help you circulate this event around the state.

John,
Thanks for the media ideas!
I go to the VIP every Monday and I already have started talking to clients
about this. But soon, I'll put out the official word!
I'm pretty good friends with Glenn Sabatka of Radio Reading Services. He is
going to try and fish this tournament too! It depends on his schedule.
We've got a pretty good media plan in place. I will put this out to DBS now
too.
How do I get in touch with the RP Organization?
Also, do you have an email address for the Disability Coordinator for Lee
County Parks?
John, shoot me an email when we get closer to the tournament and I'll give
you a registration form with all the details.
If you come up with any ideas on this tournament, please let me know. You
know this area and your insight is welcome!
Thanks,...Mike

Mike, I live in fort Myers and will plan on being in attendance. I know you
will circulate this event through the local Visually Impaired Persons Center
in North Fort Myers and through the local Fort Myers DBS office. Hopefully
you can get the local newspaper, the local radio reading service at Florida
Gulf Coast University(managed by a blind guy), local radio and TV stations
to promote the event and to advertise this event. Also, consider
contacting the disability coordinator at Lee County Parks to help with this
event. She is a real advocate for people with disability. And consider
contacting the local Retinitis pigmentosa organization to get involved in
promoting this with you. Good luck.
John

Hi everybody!
The SWFCB will be having their 1st Annual Blind Fishing Tournament on
Saturday April 28, 2012.
It will be based out of the Old Pine Island Marina, 3187 Stringfellow Rd.
St. James City, Florida. At the south end of Pine Island, west of Fort Myers
Florida.
This is an inshore slam, the team with the biggest Snook, Redfish and Sea
Trout will win top prizes.
Each team will consist of a Sighted Captain, the owner and operator of the
boat. A sighted mate or helper, and a blind angler. Both the Sighted Mate
and the Blind Angler pay a $25.00 entry fee that goes directly to the
Sighted Captain, who is a volunteer, to help defray the high cost of fuel.
So you don't have to know someone with a boat to compete. We have a pool of
sighted Captains with boats! The same thing goes for having a sighted mate
or helper, we will have a pool of sighted mates too.
The one thing, and this is important, you must be comfortable in a boat.
These boats can range from 18 feet long to maybe 26 feet. So make sure
you've got a good set of Sea Legs!
The actual fishing time will be from 8:00 am until when all teams must be
back at Old Pine Island Marina at exactly 1:00 pm!
After the judging and the winners are declared, we will present the winning
team with prizes. So far, I've gotten a pair of Shimano Symmetry 3000 FJ
spinning reels along with a pair of Shimano seven and a half foot Clarus
Medium power, fast action spinning rods. About a $200.00 rod and reel combo!
Some very nice stuff! To go to the Sighted Mate and the Blind Angler. I am
still trying to procure, for the winning team's sighted Captain, a donated
$200.00 fuel gift card from area gasoline vendors.
I will also try to get other donated prizes, it'd be nice to see many go
home with a prize!
After the prize presentation, we are having a cookout for all the team
members! I'm almost locked into someone roasting a wild hog for us! YUM!
I do expect a lot of blind people coming out for the cookout and such.
We are also having a blind art auction.
I'm trying to get a local band, The Yard Dogs, to come out and play some
good old fashioned "Swamp Music"! This band Rocks! Southern style that is!
They play a mix of Zydeco and Southern Rock! Way cool!
I've also lined up Classic Rock 94.5 to come out with their goody van.
Here's your chance to get some free swag!
I am also going to try to get some fishing magazines to cover this thing. We
might do a thing were the sighted Fishing team Captains must put on
blindfolds and use a White Cane to make their way around after they get the
boat in. I would love to get the media to interview these blindfolded
captains and get their reactions on camera! Maybe even have them cross the
street, with a blind instructor walking along side and coaching them!
The main thing I want to accomplish is to get blind people out there fishing
and having a great time! Also to show John Q Public that we blind people can
do anything except drive a car, legally that is! LOL!
Oh yeah! And fly a plane too! Anybody heard anything about a Google plane
for the blind yet?
So this promises to be a good time to be had by all!
If anyone is interested in coming round these parts, to have a real blast
and possibly go home with some nice fishing swag, give me a call or shoot me
an email!
I might be able to get some kind of a deal for lodging. So I need an idea of
how many people would be coming from out of this area.
Thanks, Ouch, now that's, where that darn hook went!...Mike
