Hi Jennifer,
I routinely pick up after my dog and dispose it in its bag in the covered trash bucket outside, which gets emptied by the trash man every week, but there have been those rare occasions when I had to flush it (minus the bag, of course) and I have never had a problem. I have a septic system and can vouch for its more than ample capacity!!

Subject: [gdum-l] Dog waste in septic system?
I am in search of accurate information on whether or not dog feces can be safely flushed in a toilet that is connected to a septic system. I have found a variety of information on line from green living sites that says yes, do flush it and that the one concern would be that the capacity of the septic system be able to handle the additional waste amount that a dog would generate above what the size of the system was designed for over the longer term. I have used the option of flushing dog waste (minus bag of course) in those rare situations where outdoor disposal was not readily available and where indoor container disposal would raise a stink. I was challenged on the safety of this disposal method when a septic system was in use, which is why I wanted to be sure my information for future occasions is accurate. Obviously, the issue of the waste of my one dog on a short term visit being added to a septic system does not apply to the volume concern raised above. This could be a consideration however if a homeowner with pet dog or dog guide were to use toilet disposal as a permanent method.
Thank you,
Jennifer and Isaac
