The SEVENTH described DVD of 2009 (Funny People) has just been released, hot on the heels of the sixth (Bruno), and The Ugly Truth, and Disney-Pixar's Up.  This sudden breakthrough to more described DVDs than any preceding year is due to the agreements of Sony and Universal Pictures to transfer the audio description tracks for any first run movies they describe to the DVDs.  In fact, there should be three more described DVDs before year-end.

 

While in most cases rental DVDs will contain the description track, you cannot count on this for Disney-Pixar's Up, for which they made a special lost-cost edition for rental without the AD track, so beware.  Also, while the Blu-ray discs should also have description from now on, you need to stick with so-called theatrical releases, not director's cuts or unrated editions, to assure yourself of getting a description track.
