Hello Laura,

Try PDF2Txt. I've tested it with a bunch of PDF Files and they are very readable.

Here's the link:

Hope this helps,
Terrell

  Subject: [nabs] Making pdfs accessible.

  Hello everyone,

I'm not really sure if anyone here can help me, but I know we've got some pretty tech savvy people on here.

There's a grocery store near my house which is much cheaper than the Jewel we were previously shopping at. However, their online weekly ads are not accessible. As in, the pdf opens but is blank. Then when I run it through Kurzweil, it's still unreadable. There are words here and there, but it's mostly garbage.

So I commented on the website and asked if they could make their pdf's accessible. The guy comes back with a question:
Will raising the resolution of the pdf fix the problem?

And I have no idea being that I have no idea what makes an accessible pdf or not. I figured this would probably help Kurzweil read it better.

What suggestions can I make? Higher resolution will slow down the site (according to this guy). This wasn't raised as an excuse or a burrier; he simply mentioned having a low resolution file to begin with so that it wouldn't slow down the site. I'm in fact very excited that I even got a real response from a real person who seems potentially willing to do something about it.

Jewel somehow has a pdf and html version of their ad online, but I of course don't know how much extra work/money that would involve to create each week.

I like this whole advocating thing and all, but I don't feel like I have the expertese to carry through with it when questions like this are posed. So, I come to you. Any and all ideas, comments, and suggestions are welcome on or off the list

  Thanks,
  Laura
