[nabs] Employment and Technology Affordability

Joe, as you said, the price is high no matter how you slice it. The
question is whether the high price is due to manufactuer's high fixed
cost, such as research and design cost, and perceived small market
size resulting in high total average cost as people tend to believe,
or simply due to high profit margin. To give a similar example, you
may know that products sold by grocery stores in low-income inner
cities in America are often twice as expensive as the same products
sold in middle-upper income suburbs. This is absolutely
counterintuitive. But it is happening because the grocery stores in
inner cities have little competition and has nothing to do with market
size or purchasing power but all to do with monopoly. This phenomenon
has been studied by Professor Michael Porter at Harvard Business
School and his associates. It'd be interesting to see if the same is
happening in the blind assistive technology market.
