Hello all:
I am a little late but I must agree. I have major difficulties navigating or
rather doing powerpt and spreadsheets with JAWS. The only set-back for me is
that this is the only creen reader I have ever used and while I am in no way
the expert, I am comfortable with it and can do most navigations well. I
would love to learn how to use others but the that learning curve...just
"gets in the way" or my patience runs thin. :-) As far as upgrade is
concerned. My rehab purchased JAWS 7 for me but now I am up to JAWS 12
without ever having to purchase an upgrade. I just keep getting the upgrade
CDs in the mail. I have also had to get the technology dept to "fix" my lap
top or desktop several times and usually I have to reactivate the activation
through the website in which FS allows me moreactivation codes. Maybe the
rehab purchased the S M As you speak of for me. In short, the person who is
in charge of tech dept at rehab and I get along well and I usually just call
and ask what is going on with upgrades. I often run in road blocks but when
that happens I get my husband to call, so maybe that helps me also (he is
about 6ft 5in & about 305lbs of muscle Lol) Anyway, thank to you all...I am
learning so much from this discussion lists that I am considering opting out
of the others just so I won't miss any emails. :-) Talk to yall on tomorrow

Hi,
That's true. You have to go with what the school/class is using. Always
been a windows user because that is what my school (grew up in public
schools) and family and work used.
Anmol is also right in that employers are primarily using windows and
Microsoft products.
Also you're not the first one, Birker,to say that Apple's screen reader is
lacking for more complex and educational settings; heard that from others as
well.Anyway the two major screen readers are both expensive but do afford
you access to complex computer functions. At least I heard you can have a
payment plan for window eyes. I don't know how to get them to deliver
cheaper, more reasonable products. The consumer organizations, for one
thing, should pressure them to make things more affordable; the least FS can
do is offer a payment plan. Its quite a delima;
we either have to wait for rehab to buy expensive software which can take
forever; they are never efficient. Alternatively pay for it on your own and
hoping you can afford the ongoing S M As. Some equipment my family
purchased me but we can't do it all. What's worse is if you are not a
student, and looking for work, rehab doesn't fund technology. It can take
years to find a job especially with the economic problems, but while you're
in a transition period, not in school, yet not employed, they don't fund
technology and meanwhile your technology is getting out of date.
BTW I am a student part time while looking for work, but you have to be a
degree seeking student in rehab's eyes for the help in getting technology.
Fortunately I was able to buy a victor reader stream; quite a handy thing.
