[nabs] First time college student with a couple questions

Hi Joseph,
Thanks for your email! Yes, I'm running the latest Pac Mate software. I also plan on getting a Netbook some time down the road as well.
I'll check out RFB&D, NLS and Bookshare for textbooks. I actually have been in contact with the NLS Music section, and I have many great resources I'll be getting from them to prepare me for my music courses.
Any ideas on materials to refresh my Algebra knowledge, and do some study of geometry, trig and pre-calc? I'll check out the calculus books you mentioned.
Thanks again for your message, and have a great day!

In Christ, Miranda

Hi,
Welcome to the list (nice seeing you here as well). I'll not go into music
(I think Chris did say about music section from NLS). I personally use an
Apex to read textbooks and use my laptop (because I need it for my major)
for viewing videos or indefth reading.
For math and sciences, as far as I remember, Bookshare has a selection of
textbooks availible - some most colleges use while others are used as
reference books, with a choice of DAISY and brf. Personally, when I took
calculus, I relied on videos, memorizing derivative and integral tables and
reading articles from websites. Towards the end, I found two books about
calculus from Bookshare - one, a useful text reference on basics of
calculus, the other, a formal intro book on differential calculus -
derivatives, differential equations and so on.
As for textbooks, a good source to begin is checking with RFBD to see if
they have audio version of textbooks; since you are using PAC Mate (I'm not
sure if you are using the latest hardware with 6.5 firmware or not) and wish
to read on the braille display, I'd say start by looking around Bookshare to
see if the site has the exact or related textbook for that class. I'm sure
(and know) you'll find textbooks on composition and arts; as for sciences,
the chief issue is use of computer braille and/or Nemeth code for some
textbooks, as well as describing some diagrams on some books. Good luck
finding those with brf...
Cheers,
Joseph (UCR)

Hi,
I will be attending college in 2012 for my BA with a major in music.
Do any of you know of Braille transcribers who will provide textbooks in BRF
format to read with a Braille display? I have a Pac Mate, and want to get
books not containing graphics in BRF if at all possible.
Any ideas on how to make biology and a pre-calculus course (with algebra,
geometry and trig review) as accessible as possible?
If anyone has any other advice pertaining to college I'd greatly appreciate
it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give, and have a great day!

In Christ, Miranda
