This is the same problem I am having at my school...running JAWS 6 or so with Office 2007. During the frist few semesters of school, I thought that was me and my inability to operate JAWS never mind that fact that I have been working with JAWS since JAWS 3.5 Smh. I started recording and then going home to complete assignments. There is another student that was also sight impaired but told the disability office that JAWS worked fine for him and therefore my complaints fell on deaf ears. Now when I go into the computer lab and there is no one working at the computer that is specified for blind students they are wondering...WTH! Why aren't you working at the computer that is specified for you instead of sitting beside another student while they are "searching" for me? Well..update the software please is all I say. Smh

Alicia and all,
Wow and I thought the community college Northern VA community college, nova, was bad!
Jaws six that is outrageous! Its ten years old.
I need the computers at school since I don't carry a laptop; I have my Braille note for class.
But due to issues like this we have major compatibility problems. Their jaws is version 8 and the computers are running Microsoft office 2007 like your school. Its appalling that they haven't gotten the updated jaws. The DSS says its being ordered at a higher level campus wide at all campuses of NOVA so the timeline is out of her hands.
It really stinks because I need equal access to the library databases, computer labs and more and can't have it.
Having my own equipment would not give me equal and
efficient access because laptops have shorter battery life and probably don't have everything the school computers have. I'm going to complain about it to the dean or someone soon if I don't see jaws installed soon. Their jaws is having trouble with forms mode and reading everything on the screen. Its rediculous. I think you should urge your school to upgrade because students after you may need it.

I have the same problem on my campus. The college has upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007 on al their computers, but they are running JAWS 6. We all know that is not very good, because the office program and the JAWS program are not compatible at all. This is why having my own equipment is the best option for me.
