Wow, they wanted you to get a sighted assistant every time you sent an email? That's ridiculouss!
I had yahoo before the days of gmail, and the only time I needed their help was to create an account. This was around 2003. We went through the whole thing where they called me back, but when they did they were actually helpful and we got the job done. I think I set up the email in a client, so that I just avoided the webmail after that, but I don't remember. Honestly, I've found gmail to be great, and would just suggest switching, if that's possible. I use my mail client, but can also use the webmail system when I need to.
