Subject: Ill-Prepared
Dear Friends & Colleagues:
I'm writing to let you know about the release of the ERC's new report, "Ill-Prepared: Health Care's Barriers for People with Disabilities." Through a three-pronged series of investigations across the country, we uncovered staggering levels of federal accessibility violations at hospitals, doctor's offices, and pharmacies. Less than 25 percent of medical service providers were compliant with accessibility standards outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
This is a startling number, and one that we aim to improve with the publication and dissemination of this report. We hope that we can count on you to share this report with your colleagues, contacts and networks in the pursuit of accessible care.
You can download the full report at www.equalrightscenter.org/illprepared. An accessible version is also available at www.equalrightscenter.org/illpreparedaccess.
Despite the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, significant impediments to service remain for the more than 54 million Americans living with a disability. These problems will only become more devastating as baby boomers age and the number of people with disabilities continues to grow.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or comments about the report. We hope that this data is useful for your advocacy, and thank you for helping to share our findings.
