[Sasi] VCR-DVD combo

My VCR died this week. I went to Wal-Mart & purchased a Magnavox VCR-DVD
combo. Discovered afterwards it will record the VCR only if I have the TV
on. I then was told the unit must come with a tuner in order for it to
record with the TV off. Is this correct? Another problem is some combos have
limited calendars, meaning someone must punch in the program start & finish
times after each 8 recordings instead of indefinitely like my old VCR, which
is hard when I cannot do this myself. Do you know about VCR-DVD combos?
