Hello all,
Pleasse do what you can with this one. For those in Illinois, Sen. Durbin
is a key member as he is majority whip in the Senate which is second in line
in the Senate leadership.
The voice number is 202-224-2152. This office does have a TTY line and that
is 202-224-8100 I believe. Someone can correct this if I am wrong though as
I am able to use voice communications.

Dear Coalition Members,
The House Appropriations Subcommittee has marked up their bill and I see no
evidence that our request was included. It is time to contact the Senate
Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Services, Education
and Related Services (Labor HHS). If you live in any of these states, please
contact your Senator.
The members are:
Democratic Subcommittee Members
. Senator Tom Harkin (Chairman) (IA)
. Senator Daniel Inouye (HI)
. Senator Herb Kohl (WI)
. Senator Patty Murray (WA)
. Senator Mary Landrieu (LA)
. Senator Richard Durbin (IL)
. Senator Jack Reed (RI)
. Senator Mark Pryor (AR)
. Senator Arlen Specter (PA)
Republican Subcommittee Members
. Senator Thad Cochran (MS)
. Senator Judd Gregg (NH)
. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX)
. Senator Richard Shelby (AL)
. Senator Lamar Alexander (TN)
You should either call or email. I am attaching a sample letter at the
bottom of this post.
I also have the email addresses of many of their key staff. If you send me
an email I will forward that to you.
Senator Kohl has been a great champion of this initiative. It would be
wonderful for him to get the support of his fellow committee members. Please
contact them as soon as you can. Thanks.

The Honorable (full name)
(Room #) (Name) Senate Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator:
Describe who you are and why this issue matters. I am a member of the
National Coalition on Deafblindness.
The Coalition is a 2,000 member organization of parents, professionals,
consumers and agencies serving the population who are deafblind. We have
been collectively advocating for the needs of children who are deafblind
since 1987.
The Coalition is seeking a $5 million increase above the President's FY11
budget in funding for technical assistance and dissemination program at the
Department of Education aimed at helping children who are both deaf and
blind ("deafblindness"). This important program assists children who are
deafblind in every district across the nation.
The national and state project centers that support the deafblind community
have not had a budget increase in over 20 years, despite a doubling of the
population of children who are deafblind over that same time period.
At a time when remarkable advances in medicine and technology are enabling
many more of these infants and children to survive and live longer, it is
important for Congress to recognize the need for increased support. Because
of the continuing budget shortfalls, however, these children are receiving
fewer services, and programs providing the services increasingly have to
operate with fewer well-trained personnel.
The modest $5 million increase we are requesting for deafblind programs for
FY11 is urgently needed to help states improve their services for families,
to support the activities of the national technical assistance and
dissemination center on deafblindness, and to strengthen personnel
preparation programs.
I am writing to urge you to include this increase in the committee markup of
the Labor HHS budget for FY11.
Thank you for reading this letter. Please let me know if you would like
further information about this very critical issue.
Sincerely,
