From karyn1421 at wowway.com Sat Jun 2 00:11:07 2012 From: karyn1421 at wowway.com (Karyn Campbell) Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2012 23:11:07 -0500 Subject: [sasi] FW: [acbconvention] ACB 2012 Conference and convention registration is now open Message-ID: <00c301cd4075$bccb3e00$3661ba00$@com> Hello all, I'm posting this in case any of you are interested in attending the convention. SASI has two program items this year; one on Monday night and one on Thursday afternoon. Please remember the following information when registering or deciding when to register: 1. If you need accommodations such as interpreters or accessible vehicles on tours, you must register by June 15. You also MUST provide a valid phone number or E-mail address. 2. Assistive Listening Devices are available for a $20 refundable deposit. You get the deposit back when you return the ALD. 3. Read tour information carefully. There are some tours where you cannot take your guide dog for safety reasons and this is made known up-front. 4. If anyone is going on the Waverly Hills tour please read the rules for that tour before signing up for it. There are some specific requirements and that one is one of the tours that does have a size limit. This one is for ghost hunters. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Pre-registration Pricing (On-site Pricing) 1. 1. To reach pre-registration, go to the ACB home page and the third quicklink will take you to the pre-registration instruction page. (This link is titled 2012 conference and convention pre-registration.) 2. The term "register" takes on a new meaning this year. For the first time, users will register for a login and password so they can save their selections and revisit the form as many times as they wish before checkout. Until checkout, selections can be added or deleted as desired. Checkout summarizes and totals your selections, takes your credit card information and processes your form. When complete, you will receive two emails; one summarizes your order and one confirms the processing of your credit card. 3. Since the convention website is also used by exhibitors, sponsors, advertisers and volunteers, the pre-registration form is now called the "attendee form." Users can browse the form and make selections as much as they want, but to save their selections for future visits and to checkout, they have to login with the login name and password they have registered for. 4. Pre-registration by telephone is still available. Call the 2012 registration line at 800-866-3242 to set up an appointment with Pam Cox. 5. Request paper forms by calling the 2012 registration line at 800-866-3242. A complete set of instructions and the pre-registration form will be mailed to you. As always if you have any questions feel free to contact me by phone or email. janet.dickelman at gmail.com (651) 428-5059. I plan to try the new form as soon as this message is sent. The summer months are times of increased travel for many of us and a lot of that travel is by air. I'm sending this message to update you on a few of the recent changes in the screening process for individuals accompanied by service animals going through a security checkpoint at a U.S. airport. I've also included reminders of how to contact some valuable resources should you encounter problems while traveling. First, recent changes now require that after you successfully go through the metal detector, you cannot make contact with your dog (other than holding the leash) until the dog has been inspected and cleared by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel. Even if you walk through the metal detector and do not set off the alarm, you can be required to undergo additional screening if you touch your dog before it has been cleared. Second, the TSA now requires passengers with service animals to maintain contact with their dog's leash at all times. This means that those individuals who in the past handed their dog's leash to a traveling companion or asked their dogs to sit and rest and dropped the leash before walking through the metal detector can no longer use these techniques. Finally, passengers traveling with any kind of animal may now be required to undergo explosives trace testing. This process is quick and easy and generally takes place after you have cleared security. You may be asked to hold your hands out, palm side up. The security officer will then wipe a swab about the size of your palm across each of your hands and then ask you to wait while a machine analyzes the swab for traces of explosives. This process leaves no residue on your hands. Remember, TSA personnel cannot request that you be separated from your dog nor are you required to remove your dog's harness, leash or collar. If you experience any problems at the security checkpoint, you should request that a supervisor be contacted for assistance. If you wish to file a complaint against the TSA, send a message to: TSA.ODPO at dhs.gov and be sure to include your name, address, phone number and email address as well as the date/time you went through the security checkpoint, the name of the airport, and the name of the airline, flight number & departure gate if known. Give a brief description of what happened and include as much as you can remember about your experience and the TSA personnel involved. The TSA recently launched TSA Cares, a new helpline number specifically designed to assist travelers with disabilities. You may call TSA Cares toll free at 1-855-787-2227 prior to traveling if you have questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint. The hours of operation for the TSA Cares helpline are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. Eastern time; weekends and federal holidays, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Eastern time. You can also visit the TSA Cares Web site at http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/disabilityandmedicalneeds/tsa_cares.shtm or email TSA-ContactCenter at dhs.gov to request information about screening procedures. If you believe you are experiencing discriminatory treatment by air carrier personnel or contractors (e.g., pilots, gate agents, or flight attendants) you may request immediate on-site assistance from a Complaint Resolution Official, commonly referred to as a CRO. You may also file a complaint with the Department of Transportation (DOT) at: http://airconsumer.dot.gov/CP_DisabilityandDiscrimination.htm For those wishing to learn more about the rights of individuals traveling by air with a guide dog, you may call The DOT's Disability Hotline at 1-800-778-4838. The Hotline is available from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, except holidays. "We are grateful that the House of Representatives and Senate, through the staunch leadership of Representative Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Senators Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), have passed legislation that will allow for a greater level of privacy and independence for blind and visually impaired Americans of all ages who take prescription medications," said Mitch Pomerantz, president of the American Council of the Blind. More than 21.5 million Americans experience vision loss that renders them unable to read prescription drug labels or other medication information independently. With the incidence of vision loss expected to increase with the rapidly aging American population, the consequences of being unable to read prescription information pose a significant public health challenge. People who are blind or visually impaired can mistakenly consume the wrong medication, the incorrect dose, or an expired drug because they are unable to read the label or to distinguish between medicine containers. Description of the Legislation Under S.3187, representatives of the blind and aging communities along with pharmacies and the U.S. Access Board will convene a working group. This group will establish best practices for pharmacies to ensure that people who are blind or visually impaired have access to prescription drug labeling. The group's recommendations would provide guidance to pharmacists on actions they can take to ensure that the blind or visually impaired understand the information on their prescription and to enable independent access to that information. The guidelines will provide pharmacies a range of options they can choose to offer consumers. Many of these options are low-cost, widely available, and compatible with equipment already in pharmacies. After pharmacies have had the opportunity to adopt the guidelines, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) will review the degree to which pharmacies are in compliance. They will examine whether the blind or visually impaired still lack safe and independent access to prescription drug labeling and issue a report to Congress on the remaining gaps and the scope of the problem. ### -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ acb-l mailing list acb-l at acb.org http://www.acb.org/mailman/listinfo/acb-l -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Why haven?t I written more? I?ve been busy with writing of another type--my autobiography. It was published in June 2012 and I?m eager to tell you about it. My book, Invisible: My Journey Through Vision and Hearing Loss, shows me as a frightened, silent child with undiagnosed vision loss trying to wriggle from an invisible prison. When finally diagnosed at sixteen as legally blind from the progressive eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa (RP), I knew what I was dealing with and understood my mystifyingly tormented childhood. Righting myself after each stumble and bump, I propelled myself forward through college and teaching positions in deaf-blind departments at the Iowa School for the Deaf and Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts--glorious, growing experiences. I left historic Boston and the spiritually rousing ocean to return to Milwaukee and my tall, dark, and handsome honey. When you meet the man who became my husband, Marvin Silver, you will fall in love with him as does everyone who knows him. I think you will thrill to our rare and enduring love story. My resilient spirit together with the love and support of my husband helped me to survive the diagnosis of progressive hearing loss, though barely at times. My own devastating experiences motivated me to find others with the dual sensory loss in our community. In time, with help, I founded the non-profit Center for Deaf-Blind Persons in Milwaukee. Life took on new meaning. I had a mission?reaching out to help others. I, like the clients, learned new skills and felt a sense of exhilaration that I would be able to live independently as a deaf-blind persons. In fact, my husband and I are involved in so many ?ordinary? activities as to give me a sense of normalcy. ?You?re just a regular gal,? he says, ?maybe just a little cuter.? Which reminds me, I should let you know that the book has romance and humor as well as tragic events. Invisible dispels myths, suggests useful teaching procedures, gives hope to people who are disabled and their families, and offers reassurance that a person with profound disabilities can live a full, rich life. By the way, the book, especially the epilogue, will be of special interest to the staff, clients, and fans of the Helen Keller National Center. The same holds true of members or prospective members of the American Association of the Deaf-Blind. You guys are in there! Smile. The book can be ordered through Amazon.com. Having worked on legislation regarding textbook access in our state-the publishers often say no at the start until educating them takes place. The federal law that Larry spoke about basicllly says that material can be transcribed into an alternative format for the use by the blind. Alternative formats include: braille, large print, audeo, and electronic format to be used by individuals with print disabilities. Thanks for suggesting that I mention my titles on this list for anyone who may be interested. They are: INSIDE MY WORLD BR 19118 AND DB 72707 AN INSIGHTFUL ACCOUNT OF THE PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED BY A BLIND CHILD AND ADOLESCENT GROWING UP IN CHICAGO TRYING TO "FIT IN" TO THE SIGHTED WORLD AND OF HIS AMAZING MOTHER'S DETERMINATION TO HELP HIM DO SO. Mexico By Touch, True Life Experiences of a Blind American Deejay BR 15306 AND CBT 6734 A personal memoir describing my adventures and misadventures living and working in Mexico for 17 years. You Can If You Think You Can: Rebound From Adversity and Follow Your Dreams BR 16802 AND CBT 6967 An easy-to-read guide that offers simple strategies to overcome failure, restore self-esteem and achieve success and happiness in one's life. ALL THREE ARE ALSO AVAILABLE IN PRINT FROM AMAZON OR BARNES AND NOBLE. Yesterday, I spoke with a librarian at our local talking book library. She said they start making digital recordings after they obtain permission from the publisher. I will start checking next week (or may have to wait until after the holiday). It certainly appears that you and a couple others on the list seem to be in agreement as to the automatic legality of producing accessible format. By the way, Larry, I did read and enjoyed the book about your life. Good job! Perhaps, you should post those titles on the list again for newcomers or anyone who may have forgotten. Smile.
