I just attended a talk by Dr. Cordes on Monday. You know, he really is a
remarkable guy. As a blind person, I don't feel obligated to praise other
blind people. But I think I'd admire Dr. Cordes even if he wasn't blind. He
is very generous with his time, very easy going, and yet at the same time, a
real strong person. Its tough to be that driven while at the same time being
so patient. His talk was full of interesting, new concepts for me. For
example, he mentioned that when he was trying to get into Notre Dame, a
professor opened a book to a diagram of a liver, slid it across a table to
his dad, and asked, "How is he going to learn that?" But Dr. Cordes pointed
out that a picture of a liver doesn't really mean anything. That just
happens to be the way most people learn about liver function. But its not
the only way and it may not be any better than many other ways you could
learn about the functions of a liver.
