Mission, Goals & Vision

Role: The South Carolina Low Country Chapter of Visually Impaired Veterans of America has been founded to promote, foster and maintain the well being and quality of life of those visually impaired veterans and others with vision loss. While membership centers on previous armed forces personnel, this is an organization devoted to all of the nations citizens with vision loss. Areas of interest and involvement are, but not limited to: Research and Development; Technical Assistance; Training and Education; National, state and local issues of disability and assistance; promotion of basic quality of life issues (transportation, ADA issues, orientation and mobility, subsistence issues); and, most important, the well being of those disabled with vision loss.

Mission Statement: The South Carolina Low Country Chapter of Visually Impaired Veterans of America serves to assist and provide needs for those visually impaired veterans and others with vision loss in South Carolina. This may be accomplished through counseling, administrative and clerical assistance, technology, education and training assistance, and resource location and transportation identification, and general assistance in whatever may apply to a specific person’s needs.

Vision: The South Carolina Low Country Chapter seeks to be a recognized leader and innovator in the identification and provision of support services in those areas where federal, state and local governments and organizations may miss or fail to provide needs consistent with a visually impaired or blinded citizen. Further to ensure the access to adaptive needs for training and education, quality of life and rehabilitation and employment for those who may desire it.

Purposes: Goals of the South Carolina Low Country Chapter of Visually Impaired Veterans of America are to maintain, promote and foster:
  • Well-being and rehabilitation of all visually impaired veterans of the Armed Forces of America who are eligible to receive services from the Veterans Administration
  • To develop and encourage the practice of high standards of personal and professional conduct among visually impaired veterans
  • The right of all visually impaired veterans to have at all times those rights and benefits granted by the laws of the United States of America to them as veterans of the military forces
  • Public confidence and awareness in visually impaired veterans
  • The social, economic and cultural level of all visually impaired veterans
  • To strive continually for the respect of the legal rights of those with vision loss on the federal, state and local levels
  • To encourage the development of products and materials that will aid those with vision loss in their pursuit of personal and professional goals and status
  • Support such programs that ensure the citizens of the United States of America, through their duly elected officials, shall always maintain an acceptable program of rehabilitation and compensation for the visually impaired veteran and the those disabled by vision loss
  • Conduct and cooperate in programs and courses of study for the benefit of those with vision loss
  • To promote opportunities for members to increase their knowledge of educational, professional and rehabilitation standards and methods and to increase their individual capabilities
  • To hold meetings and conferences for the mutual improvement and education of members and those with vision loss.
  • To acquire, preserve and disseminate information relative to the functions and accomplishments of visually impaired veterans and those with vision loss
  • To unite through the Visually Impaired Veterans of America, persons interested in maintaining, promoting and fostering the goals, objectives and purposes of VIVA, and to do all and everything necessary, suitable and proper for the accomplishment of said purposes, goals and any of the powers heretofore set forth, and as may otherwise be authorized by law, and to do every other act or acts, thing or things, incidental or pertaining to or growing out of connected with the aforesaid goals/purposes, or powers, or any part or parts thereof, provided the same are not inconsistent with the provisions of the law under which VIVA is organized.
