Legislative update on the Louis Braille Coin

FYI: Senate bill S2321 is still in the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. This is a bill to authorize the issuance of a commemorative coin to honor the life and legacy of Louis Braille. This legislation calls for proceeds from the sale of the coin to be given to the National Federation of the Blind for Braille literacy initiatives.

This past week S2321 obtained only 8 new cosponsors. We are continuing efforts to oppose this measure as it is currently drafted. We hand delivered letters to every Senate office explaining ACB's position and encouraging senators to offer an amendment that would equitably distribute funds from the sale of the coin.

Contact your senators and urge them to oppose the bill as it is currently written. Further, urge them to support an amendment to the bill which would allow other organizations that are involved in Braille literacy initiatives to be eligible for the funds from the sale of the coin.

You can reach your senators through the senate switchboard, 202-224-3121.
