65 Years of ACB: A Legacy of Advocacy, Community, and Progress

Posted on October 28, 2026

In 2026, the American Council of the Blind (ACB) celebrates 65 years of advancing independence, equality, and opportunity for people who are blind or have low vision. Founded on July 7, 1961, ACB began with a group of individuals committed to creating a national organization grounded in democratic values, member participation, and a shared vision for the future. Their determination laid the foundation for a movement that continues to make a difference today.

From its earliest days, ACB has championed the rights and voices of people who are blind or have low vision. The organization has advocated for landmark civil rights legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Air Carrier Access Act. Through national advocacy, collaboration, and grassroots action, ACB has worked to advance independence and improve opportunities in education, employment, transportation, technology, and everyday life.

Community has always been central to ACB’s work. State affiliates, local chapters, and special-interest organizations bring people together to share experiences, build relationships, develop leaders, and advocate for change. Today, ACB continues this tradition through accessible programming, community calls, educational opportunities, and initiatives that help members connect and make their voices heard.

As we honor this 65-year legacy, we also look toward the future. 65 Days of Giving celebrates ACB’s history while inviting members, families, friends, and supporters to help carry its mission forward. Every contribution supports the advocacy, programs, and connections that strengthen our community and advance opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision.

Your donation makes a difference because it helps turn ACB’s mission into meaningful action.
