Legal Counsel (Full-Time)

Job Description:

Department: Advocacy & Governmental Affairs

Reports To: Director of Advocacy & Governmental Affairs

The Legal Counsel prepares and litigates class-based claims on behalf of the American Council of the Blind (ACB) and other clients as required. The Legal Counsel also supports the Director of Advocacy & Governmental Affairs in matters of legislative and regulatory advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the organization’s vision, mission and core values and implements strategies necessary to achieve them.
  • Prepares and litigates class-based claims on behalf of ACB arising under the ADA, IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Fair Housing Act, and any other federal, state or local civil or disability rights claims.
  • Engages in effective litigation techniques, including persuasive oral and written arguments; expert and fact witness preparation, examination and cross-examination of witnesses; and presentation of physical, documentary and other types of evidence.
  • Drafts legal documents including but not limited to, discovery, memoranda of law, motions, orders, answers, complaints, counter-complaints, and correspondence.
  • Conducts in-depth client intake interviews as part of the case assessment process for consultation and/or trial preparation.
  • Consults with and accepts guidance from the specified external disability litigation expert.
  • Supports the Director of Advocacy & Governmental Affairs in matters of administrative and legislative advocacy, including reviewing proposed rules and legislation, meeting with agency staff and legislators, and providing written and oral comments/testimony.
  • Represents ACB in administrative and court actions.
  • Expands outreach to attorneys and legal organizations by representing ACB in appropriate Bar Sections and Committees.
  • Maintains appropriate attorney billable time records required to obtain award of attorney fees.
  • Participates in the planning of major ACB events – D.C. Leadership and ACB National Convention.
  • Maintains bar admission in the state of residence, including completion of all continuing legal education (CLE) requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This role has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed attorney in state of residence
  • 5 - 7 years of civil litigation experience
  • Experience in conducting discovery and filing motions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a trial and/or appellate attorney
  • Experience in class action litigation
  • Experience working with people who are blind or have low vision

Salary:

$120,000 - $145,000 per year

Travel:

  • This role will be required to represent ACB at court appearances in any jurisdiction in which ACB conducts litigation, Congressional and Organizational meetings, D.C. Leadership Conference (held in Washington, D.C. area in March)
  • ACB National Conference & Convention (week-long trip to convention location with on-site responsibilities in July)
  • Some national travel for cases will also be required.

Law Student Volunteer, Spring and Summer 2026

Job Location: Columbia, SC

About the Office:

The United States Attorney's Office is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the District of South Carolina. This includes all criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. The district extends over the entire state of South Carolina. The population of our district is over five million people.

South Carolina is a southeastern U.S. state known for its shoreline of subtropical beaches and marsh-like sea islands. Coastal Charleston is a historic city, defined by pastel-colored houses, Old South plantations and Fort Sumter, where the Civil War’s opening shots were fired. To the north is the Grand Strand, a roughly 60-mile stretch of beach front known for golf courses and the vacation town Myrtle Beach. South Carolina is also known for its golf courses, fishing, historic districts, and its Lowcountry cuisine.

Job Description:

Selected candidates will be assigned work from the criminal and civil divisions. Our goal is to introduce law students to the federal system and litigation involving the United States. We strive to assist students in developing their legal research and writing skills. Students will perform legal research and writing; draft various pleadings, motions, briefs, and other documents; and assist with witness preparation, depositions, and hearings or trials. Students will also be provided with several opportunities to meet members of the judiciary, representatives of various federal agencies, and to participate in substantive programs to familiarize them with the federal legal system.

The Criminal Division may give students an opportunity to work on a wide variety of practice areas, including narcotics, public corruption, healthcare fraud, cybercrimes, terrorism, and other federal crimes. Within the Civil Division, students may work on a wide variety of defensive and affirmative litigation, including employment discrimination, medical malpractice, general torts, constitutional torts, immigration, prisoner litigation, commercial, financial, and civil fraud.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

Spring 2026: The internship will begin approximately in mid to late February and last a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks.

Summer 2026: The internship will begin approximately in June 2026 and last a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for this internship, ALL the following requirements must be met:

  • Student Status (Spring): You must be considered in good academic standings by the school and be a second- or third-year Law Student.
  • Student Status (Summer): You must be considered in good academic standing by the school and currently be a rising second or rising third year Law Student. Law school graduates are not eligible for summer positions.
  • Grade Point Average: You must have at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Citizenship: Student Interns must be United States citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States. (Currently, natives of American Samoa, Swains Island and certain inhabitants of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups that owe permanent allegiance to the United States.)

Volunteer Law Student, Summer 2026

Job Location: Concord, NH

About the Office:

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire consists primarily of two divisions, Criminal and Civil. The Criminal Division is responsible for the prosecution of all federal crimes within the district. The Civil Division acts as the litigation counsel for the United States and its departments and agencies in civil proceedings filed in federal court. The office utilizes unpaid volunteer interns to assist in the preparation of both criminal and civil matters occurring in the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Job Description:

Interns can expect to: research and write memoranda and pleadings in pending criminal and civil cases; organize and summarize non-grand jury records; assist AUSAs in preparing and responding to discovery requests; assemble exhibits for trial; assist in research and writing of appellate briefs and motions; observe trials, sentencing proceedings and other hearings.

Law Student Volunteer, Summer 2026

Job Location: Miami, FL

About the Office:

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida (“USAO-SDFL”) is responsible for representing the federal government in litigation involving the United States in the Southern District of Florida, one of the largest Districts in the country. This includes criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the United States, actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers, and civil rights litigation. The main office of the USAO-SDFL is in Miami, and there are branch offices in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Fort Pierce.

Job Description:

Law Clerk Interns (“Interns”) are assigned to one of the Offices and Divisions for the duration of the internship.

  • The Criminal Division prosecutes violations of federal criminal law, including narcotics, fraud, environmental, bank robbery, firearms, child exploitation, and human trafficking crimes.
  • Interns assigned to the Criminal Division in the Miami Office will be assigned to one of the following sections: (1) Economic Crimes & Cyber Fraud; (2) General Crimes Section; (3) Violent Crime & Special Victims; (4) Border & Immigration Crimes Enforcement or (5) Narcotics.
  • Interns in the Criminal Divisions in the Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Fort Pierce offices will work on a wide range of criminal cases.
  • The Civil Division investigates and litigates False Claims Act cases involving Health Care Fraud and other fraud on the United States and defends government agencies and employees who have been named as defendants in civil actions involving discrimination, bankruptcy, immigration, and the Federal Tort Claims Act. Interns in the Civil Division will be assigned to either the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach office.
  • The Asset Forfeiture Division works in both the criminal and civil areas to seize property which has been identified as subject to forfeiture to the United States. Interns in the Asset Forfeiture Division will be assigned to the Miami office.
  • The Appellate Division works on matters representing the United States in both criminal and civil appeals. Interns in the Appellate Division will be assigned to the Miami office.

Our goal is to introduce Interns to the federal legal system; to refine their legal research and writing skills; and above all, to make their time at the office enjoyable and worthwhile. During the summer academic term, Interns research and draft pretrial and trial motions and memoranda and appellate briefs. Interns work directly with AUSAs on both short and long-term projects and have opportunities to observe trials, motion and settlement conferences, and appellate arguments.

Depending upon an intern’s academic schedule, the summer program also provides opportunities for Interns to meet with a variety of speakers from the federal legal system. We also host sessions with AUSAs on effective advocacy. Interns are strongly encouraged to attend and observe court proceedings and to attend office training programs. Each Intern also has one supervising attorney who provides assistance and support consistently throughout the summer.

Hours/Weeks Required: 240 hours (minimum) 8 – 12 weeks. Under certain circumstances and if feasible, we are amenable to permitting interns to work more than 240 hours if necessary to meet their law school externship requirements. The application cover letter should make clear if the student desires to work more than 240 hours in an academic term.

Qualifications:

Any law student with a strong academic record who has completed at least one semester of law school may apply for the volunteer internship. Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited law school at least half time. Law school graduates and graduating students are not eligible.  Must be a U.S. citizen.    

Due to the nature of the USAO’s work, before beginning employment, Applicants who are offered an internship, must pass a required suitability review and receive a favorable determination based on information provided in the security forms, a credit report, and fingerprint check that can take three or more months to complete.

Salary:

Interns are uncompensated. School credit is possible at the discretion of the law school. Interns are responsible for all parking and transit expenses incurred.

The district extends over 13,563.9 square miles and includes 32 counties. The population of our district is over three million people. Mecklenburg is the largest county in WDNC with over one million people. Graham is the smallest with just over 8,000 people. Charlotte is the largest city in the state, the 2nd largest banking center in America, and has a metropolitan area of 1.8 million people. Half of the great Smoky Mountains National Park, approximately 800 square miles is in the Western District of North Carolina as well as 250 of the 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Pisgah and Nantahala Forest cover over one million acres of our district. The largest Native American Community in the eastern half of the United States, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is in WDNC.

Job Description:

Law Student Volunteer Interns assist with both criminal and civil cases in the District Court.  Law Student Volunteer Interns can expect to research and write motions in pending cases; to research legal issues for indictments, investigations and appellate briefs; to assemble exhibits for trial; and to observe hearings and trials on which they are working or in which they are interested. We have one volunteer internship position available in our St. Thomas office.

Qualifications:

Rising second- and third-year law students. Must be a U.S. citizen. Will be subject to a background investigation due to the sensitive nature of the work performed by the USAO. A minimum of 8 to 10 weeks, commencing in May or June 2026, are required for the internship, with a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Summer 2026 Volunteer Legal Intern

Job Description:

Our office seeks law students of varied backgrounds and skills to assist Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in our Houston, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Laredo, and McAllen offices. Our law student internship program provides participants with supervised and direct responsibility for criminal, civil, appellate, and post-conviction litigation. This includes conducting research and writing assignments, assisting AUSAs with trial and witness preparation, participating in moot courts prior to appellate oral arguments, attendance at depositions, mediations, and trials, and much more. Some of the outstanding memoranda written by law student interns have been sent to other United States Attorney's Offices and government agencies throughout the country. Needless to say, selection for an internship at the United States Attorney's Office is a significant accomplishment, bringing the opportunity for significant professional development.

Qualifications:

First and Second year law students are welcome to apply for summer internships. Internships will begin as soon as mid-May and end by early August.

Law students must be United States citizens, and will be required to successfully pass a background investigation adjudicated by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. The investigation will address a variety of areas such as credit history, drug usage, arrests, and mental health treatment. Applicants who may have issues in these areas must be prepared to provide supporting documentation showing that all matters have been resolved as part of the pre-investigation process.

The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Northern District of Indiana is one of 94 USAOs in the nation.

The United States Attorney's Office Law Internship Program provides an exciting opportunity and insight into the federal legal system and receive an introduction to federal procedures in both the civil and criminal settings. Interns will work with several different Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) over the course of the semester. Typical duties of the interns may include:

  • Performing legal research and/or assisting with research projects;

Job Description:

Law students conduct legal research, draft memoranda, observe court proceedings, and assist in litigation and trials. Work is performed in-person in either the Albany or Syracuse office depending on placement.

Qualifications:

  • Current law students enrolled at least half-time at an accredited institution, including: 1Ls (rising 2Ls in summer 2026); 2Ls (rising 3Ls in summer 2026); or graduate law (LL.M.) students enrolled at least half-time and not practicing law.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Demonstrated research, writing and analytical ability.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Summer Hours: Full-Time. Must be able to commit to a minimum of 35 hours per week for 8 to 10 continuous weeks. “Split” summers are allowed but not encouraged.
  • Placement is conditioned upon successful completion of a suitability/fitness review and receipt of a favorable determination based on information provided in your security forms, credit report, and fingerprint check. Placement cannot commence until cleared. Common issues that may arise are as follows:
    • Citizenship: Students must be U.S. citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States (natives of American Samoa).
    • Drug Use: Any type of illegal drug use will require a written explanation describing the events surrounding the drug use.
    • Credit History: All outstanding credit problems must be resolved before work can begin. A history of serious credit problems may be grounds for disqualification.

The New York City Conflicts of Interest Board (“COIB”) is seeking a Specialist for its Annual Disclosure (“AD”) Unit. COIB is a small, independent agency that protects the integrity of City government by administering and enforcing the City’s annual disclosure law and conflicts of interest law. Each year, nearly 9,000 public servants are required to file reports disclosing their personal financial interests to help ensure that those interests do not conflict with their official duties.

The AD Specialist will:

  • Communicate with filers, orally and in writing, to notify them of their filing requirements and deadlines, provide technical support regarding the filing process, inform them when revisions are needed to their report, and assist with those revisions.
  • Manage the daily operations of the filing process for select groups of filers, including identifying public servants required to file in coordination with City agencies; maintaining the administrative database; and tracking compliance.
  • Review reports, conduct research, contact filers, and work with agency attorneys to ensure that filers are transparent about their financial interests and to identify potential conflicts that need to be addressed through Board orders and formal recusals.

Warehouse Worker

Job Location: Sand Island, HI

Job Description:

Receive product shipped by vendors/distributors, fill customer backorders, and update order status, stock product shelves, and deliver merchandise to customers.

Hours:

Monday – Friday; 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must:

  • Have good knowledge of receiving, and inventory management.
  • Have a basic understanding of retail sales; basic computer skills.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Current state driver’s license and proof of insurability.
  • Ability to operate a pallet jack.
  • At least 2 years of warehousing/delivery experience preferred but not required
  • Must be flexible in schedule to meet customer demands.
