A Tribute to Tori Zigler: A Light in Words, Community, and Creativity
November 13,1984- July 28, 2024
Victoria “Tori” Zigler was a vibrant and beloved presence in the American Council of the Blind (ACB) community—a woman whose life reflected a deep well of creativity, compassion, and quiet strength. Born with congenital glaucoma and later losing her sight completely, Tori didn’t see blindness as a barrier. Instead, she saw it as one thread in the rich tapestry of her life, a life filled with stories, connection, and care.
As an accomplished author, Tori wrote and self-published over 50 children’s books and poetry collections, including The Great Tadpole Rescue and The Leaf Monster and Other Children's Poems. Her books, often infused with themes of kindness, imagination, and inclusion, invited readers of all ages, especially children with disabilities—into worlds where they could see themselves reflected in joy and dignity.
Tori’s storytelling extended far beyond the written word. She found deep joy and meaning in the ACB community, where she was not only a faithful participant but also an essential presence. She was an active part of the crafters group, where she shared both her talent and encouragement. She was on-hand during cooking calls to give recipe substitutions for those with dietary restrictions. She was a friendly and welcoming host for ACB community calls, often helping others feel seen and heard. And as a cherished member of the “morning crew,” Tori helped set the tone for the day, bringing her steady, kind energy to the start of many people’s mornings. Tori was a proud international member of ACB, joining after finding the ACB Community, and never let the time difference stop her involvement.
Tori made friendships that spanned miles and time zones—deep, lasting connections built through shared experiences, laughter, and mutual support. Whether offering a thoughtful comment, a funny anecdote, or a heartfelt poem, she nurtured a sense of belonging in every space she entered. Her gentle wit, open heart, and commitment to being fully present left a lasting imprint on those who knew her.
At home in Wales with her husband Kelly and their beloved animal companions, Tori embraced a life full of reading, crafting, writing, and connecting. She often described herself as a mix of Hermione Granger’s thirst for learning and Luna Lovegood’s whimsical wonder—an apt reflection of someone who combined intelligence, warmth, and whimsy in everything she did.
Tori Zigler’s legacy is one of story, service, and soul. As we honor her as an ACB Angel, we celebrate not only the books she wrote but the lives she touched, the friendships she nurtured, and the love she gave so freely. Her light lives on in our community, in our memories, and in every morning call, crafting or cooking event, and heartfelt word shared.
